Cultural burning first for Adelaide Parklands

Adelaide Metropolis Council, in conjunction with the Kaurna Nation Cultural Heritage Association, will upcoming month set alight up to 10,000sq m of Golden Wattle Park in the south parklands as section of an Aboriginal cultural burn up.

Cultural burns are a fireplace administration strategy utilised to shield crops and animals and to minimise the possibility of bushfires.

Adelaide Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor, also chair of the Adelaide Park Lands Authority, said the occasion recognised the council’s commitment to indigenous culture and biodiversity.

“A great deal of what it does is it will provide again the purely natural grasses but kills the weeds … so provides again the biodiverse nature of what the first plantings have been,” Ms Verschoor said.

“It has the likely for us to appear at how we use it for administration around the broader parklands.”
